The love padlock tradition has been around for a while, but it became a worldwide craze with the publication of Federico Moccia’s two novels – Tre Metri sopra il Cielo (Three Metres above the Sky) and Ho Voglia di Te (I Desire You).

According to the legend, lovers in Rome who write their names on a padlock, attach it to the third lamppost on the Ponte Milvio’s northern side and throw the key into the Tiber will remain together forever.

Sadly, the authorities in Rome cleared the Ponte Milvio of the love locks in September 2012. Dublin City Council acted quickly in January 2012, cutting off the love locks which had adorned the Ha’penny Bridge.

The City Council may have cleared the love locks from Dublin in January but by June 26 2012 (when colleen trahan took this lovely photo) they had made a reappearance.

It’s traditional for newlywed Russians to share a kiss on a bridge. It’s said to bring good luck to the happy couple. The pedestrian Luzhkov Bridge that spans the Moskva River features trees, “planted” so that lovers can attach their love locks. Photo by juniorpeaches
